Sunday’s Prayer

Lent is a time of prayer, fasting, and reflection as we consider Jesus’ journey to the cross and prepare for Resurrection Day. Each Sunday of Lent, we will prayerfully explore a Psalm that focuses on our need for repentance and complete reliance on God’s mercy. Today’s prayer is based on the sixth Psalm and it’s plea for healing and mercy.

You are invited to find a comfortable setting and spend some time in quiet reflection on these ancient words.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.
Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint;
    heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.
My soul is in deep anguish.
    How long, Lord, how long?

Pause… Breathe… consider confessing your need for healing body, mind, and soul.

Turn, Lord, and deliver me;
    save me because of your unfailing love.
Among the dead no one proclaims your name.
    Who praises you from the grave?

Pause… Breathe… praise God for the sacrifice made on Calvary.

 I am worn out from my groaning.

All night long I flood my bed with weeping
    and drench my couch with tears.
My eyes grow weak with sorrow;
    they fail because of all my foes.

Pause… Breathe… share your weakness and sorrow with the one who brings strength.

Away from me, all you who do evil,
    for the Lord has heard my weeping.
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;
    the Lord accepts my prayer.
All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish;
    they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame.

Pause… Breathe…
cry out for mercy and give thanks to the Lord for hearing your prayers
sit for a moment and listen.

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.
Ephesians 3:20 MSG

Pause… Breathe… keep silent
as thoughts arise
simply respond:
Lord, You are more than able.

Amen
