Advent’s More

, ,

As the season of giving thanks for the small things draws to a close, I awake before the sun to a strong wind pushing lake waters into waves. They crash and splash on the rock wall meant to keep soil in its place.

We had to repair the wall this year after several storms and high water toppled the wall of heavy rocks. I watched in wonder as my boys used the machine to stack new stones in their place. It reminded me of all the hours they spent pushing the toy versions around in the sandbox. Only bigger. And more dangerous. It took a few days of sweaty hard work to finish, and the wall is stronger now. Just in time for the north wind to usher in winter weather on the first day of the season we call Advent.

Advent simply means arrival. For followers of Jesus it is the season to remember when God came into the world. I keep thinking of the Psalmist’s words, “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.” Gratitude opens the gates to God’s presence and brings me to the season of God’s arrival.

I hear Advent’s call to make room in my heart for more.

More light.
More hope.
More joy.
More love.

More Jesus.
